Three sessions: June 5, 12, and 19 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Have you ever wished you had recorded the exact date you first saw those swallowtail larvae on the parsley last year? When did the daylilies start to flower? And when did you plant those seeds? Imagine not only having a record like this, but making it beautiful too. Keeping an illustrated journal is a great way to relax outdoors, enjoy being in the moment, and keep some important records for yourself or for a citizen science project. In this class, we will look at the joys and challenges of working outside, strategies for regular sketching and writing, suggestions for materials, and how to get started. Each participant will begin an illustrated journal of their own. $35 for garden members, $45 for non-members. Materials needed: sketchbook, mechanical or HB pencil, ruler, eraser, optional colored pencils

Differences in shape, size, and color are just a few of the reasons we love them! Learn how to create an accurate flower illustration in graphite using line techniques and measurements. Two sessions: July 3 and 24 from 6 to 8 p.m. Trees contribute so much to our lives. Cool off this July with a drawing class dedicated to our shade trees. Learn how trees are classified, and how this applies to illustrating them. Explore ways of recording leaf structure through leaf rubbings (not just for children!), tracings, and sketches. We will finish with a detailed graphite tonal drawing of a leaf. $70 for garden members, $90 for non-members. Materials needed: drawing paper, tracing paper, 2H, HB, 2B graphite pencils
